QOTD #00033: “Tell us about a time a stranger brought a smile to your face or a tear to your eye”
Nowadays it feels like the world has become cynical. But there is still kindness everywhere; you just need to take a moment to look. Is there a time where you had your faith in humanity restored by the kindness of a stranger? Tell us a time when someone in public spread positivity and put a smile on your face!

It really warmed my heart
"So I'm a waitress for a living and this lady, when I handed her her check, told me that I made her experience wonderful and that she thought I was doing a great job and it brought a smile to my face. It really warmed my heart. It's the little things in life, just little compliments like that."

"I watch somebody propose . It was somebody that I knew getting proposed to you by somebody who I had no idea about until , like , 15 minutes prior literally like oh , hey , yeah , It was just my boyfriend . And then I was just like , Oh , my God . She's getting proposed to right before my eyes . I'm here . And Yeah , it's pretty much , she said ."

From the mouths of babes
"So the person that made me smile.? I was thinking about How I have a very distinctive voice and I just don't like my voice sometimes, especially when I'm listening to recordings being played back. And this little girl, she was like about 11 to 12 years old, she came up to my register. We were talking and she said, oh my gosh, I just love your voice! And that just made my day."

A random act of Vietnamese iced tea.
"So I used to live in Vietnam for the past three years, and I was waiting outside of a restaurant, waiting on some of my friends, and the doorman there saw that I was - it was, like, really hot and I was tired, a bit out of breath. And they have a drink there - just iced tea, it's called 'cha da' - and he offered me a cup of tea from his own personal cup, and it was such a kind gesture. He didn't know me, we don't speak the same language, and it was just one of those beautiful moments of humanity where someone just did something kind for me. I spent like 20 minutes at dinner talking about it 'cuz it just caught me off-guard. And I was so thirsty at that moment, like, it was like an answer to my prayers, essentially. It was a beautiful interaction, and it was lovely to just see the humanity."

Apple Pay SOS from a total stranger.
"The nicest thing I ever saw somebody do happened to me the other day. My boyfriend and I were in a store and the Apple Pay on the on the machine wasn't working, and the person who was helping us just kinda walked away, and some person behind us just slid her card into the machine and paid for our order so that we could go. And it was, like, the nicest thing that anyone's done for me, probably, ever."

Boy helping with groceries left me cheesing!
"You know me, I like to do nice things for others, and so when I see it, it's always a smile on my face. But one time, I saw this little kid - mmm, couldn't be more than 7, 8 - assisting this elderly lady put some groceries in her car, and then he ran off to go and see his mom. Definitely cheesing."

From bad to good day at Dunkin' Donuts.
"Something a stranger did for me that made me smile was one day, I was having a bad day, and the person had no idea that I was having a bad day, but I was having one, and they actually purchased my meal in front of me at the line at Dunkin' Donuts."

Young and old crossing the road together.
"Something a stranger did that made me smile recently was a young man, probably 13 or 14, helped an elderly lady cross the street Downtown last week, and I thought it was extremely kind and wholesome of the young boy to take initiative and help her."

An act of good gave me hope.
"I once saw a stranger help an old man cross the street and it made me smile. You don't really see that often, and it reminds me that there's some good still left in this world."

A helping hug to the homeless
"One time, I saw a stranger just give a hug to a homeless man that looked like he was having a hard time and gave him some cash and some snacks. It was really beautiful."

Choking with laughter (and perfume) at the mall.
"Well, I was at the mall and this girl made a joke, and I think she was a worker there, and it was just so funny. I laughed so hard, I started choking on those perfume smells. But yeah, that was a highlight."

Watching the wide-eyed first-years wandering campus
"I think a recent time a stranger brought a smile to my face was just recently I was on campus and I was watching the students walk around , and I think it was, people are doing campus tours right now , obviously , because people that got in or that are just already applied and are waiting to hear actually sure what's going on right now . But I always see the high schoolers walking around and they just they just looked really odd by the campus and by all of us college students , and it's just it's a lot of fun to see them . Kind of like so impressed by us and like looking back and when I was a high school , and I was taking college tours and looking at all the college kids around being like , wow , they're so grown up , so that was just very fun ."

A kind wake-up call on the subway.
"A time that a stranger brought a smile to my face was when I fell asleep on the New York City subway, and the gentleman that I rode the subway with every single morning at 3 a.m. woke me up for my stop. Never spoken to him before, but he made sure to get me up and get me to work on time."

Salty pretzels from a sweet guy.
"So when I was a teenager, once I was visiting New York to look at colleges, and this guy at a pretzel stand in the little food court we went to gave me a free pretzel. And then I went back to go buy another pretzel and he just gave it to me for free again, and it was so sweet 'cuz he was, like, cute. And my mom said he was hitting on me. I thought it was very sweet."

A 'good job' and a good smile.
"I think one thing that someone has said to me was how great of a job I was doing at my work, and that's pretty much it. They made me smile. It made me happy."

Some much-needed comfort for better days.
"So, this one time I was working at this waxing place. I won't say the name of it. But there was a client that came in - I was, like, in a really tough spot. I was struggling, you know, paying bills and everything, and she told me that she reads energy, and I believe in stuff like that. Um, and she was basically just came up to me randomly and told me, like, she feels that I'm going through a rough spot and that she knows and feels that everything is gonna be okay. And right then and there, I just burst out crying, like, it was just something I needed to hear. And eventually, things did get better. Um, so yeah, I don't know what kinda energy she felt, but she was right, and yeah, I needed that that day."

When an innocent kid wanted an autograph.
"So a time a stranger brought a smile to my face has to be - I was at an anime convention and I was doing a panel on Twitch streaming. Oh, it's a community-run panel, wasn't that big of a deal. But so we leave the panel and we all go and start sitting down at the local tabletop gaming room, and this little kid comes with his girlfriend - I believe it's a girlfriend - doesn't matter - little kid comes over to me, starts whispering to his girlfriend, walks up to me and asks me, 'Can I have your autograph,' in the most innocent way as possible with this little notepad and pen. I was totally taken aback. I was not the 'big cheese' by this point, and I'm still not, and I was - This kid was so innocent, just brought a huge smile to my face. But, that's my story."

When strangers refilled my car (and me) on E.
"A time a stranger brought a smile to my face and a tear to my eye: In my early 20s, I was like insanely broke, like, just poor, poor, poor, and I was on my way to try to pawn a DVD player, but they didn't take it 'cuz they already have a million of 'em, and I was trying to pawn it for gas money. So they didn't want my DVD player. I'm driving home. I ran out of gas. So I'm just, like, sitting in my car crying, I'm not really sure what to do, and this guy and his mom - they pull over to see what's wrong, and I'm like, 'Oh, I, you know, tried to pawn this for gas money and it didn't work, and now I'm outta gas and I can't get home.' And not only did they put gas in my car, they, like, drove - they they bought a gas can and, you know, filled it up, came back, put gas in my car, and then handed me cash so I could also get something to eat that day. And it just always stuck with me because there was no judgment. They didn't say, like, 'Well, why are you poor? Are you on drugs?' or, you know, it was just they just saw someone in trouble and they were like, 'What do you need?' And it just sticks with me and, you know, I - and so now, I try to pay that forward and be that way with people also."
