QOTD #00047: “What skills or hobbies or wisdom did you pick up during quarantine?”
When we first shut down in quarantine, it was a dark time. A lot of us gave ourselves goals to keep us busy during our time alone. Did you pick up any quarantine hobbies or quarantine skills during Covid? Tell us what you learned during lockdown.

I've been crocheting. Well, mostly sewing.
"Over quarantine I learned how to crochet, I learned how to knit, and I also started to do more paintings. Um, so yeah, that was some things I picked up. Oh, also- I also bought a sewing machine to start sewing, but I haven't quite picked it up as [of] yet. But I have been crocheting, and I have been making some cool items with it."

Nothing to do but cook desserts and get along with family.
"So, during quarantine I learned that it's easier to get along with my family since I lived at home at the time. So, I learned how to cook with them, and we made lots of desserts during the day because we did not have anything else to do."

Learned how to care for this little one.
"Well, during quarantine we got this one. This is Emma. She was adopted from South Korea. They found her at a meat farm. She was gonna be somebody's meal. Um, probably learning how to care for a dog, taking some courses. I'm still taking courses. Um, I'm feeding her and then, you know, loving her the right way."

I'm perfectly fine being on my own.
"During quarantine I realized that I'm perfectly fine being on my own because, you know, sometimes, even if you're an introvert, you kinda feel like, "I wish I had more friends. I wish I could hang out with them more often or go to different places." And only when you're left on your own do you really start realizing if you're like a wholesome personality or if you're missing or lacking something. So, it wasn't an easy journey, but I did realize that, yes, I am perfectly fine just having nobody, and it's okay."

I discovered how to Discord.
"I'd say stuff like Discord - I didn't ever use Discord before, you know, to video chat or, you know, have a place to even just text- text chat with a bunch of people in a group, so - But now, I use it all the time. Now, even as quarantine's starting to wind down, I still use it. And we, you know, now that I live in some different state other than my friends, it's- it's okay to be with, you know, friends online instead of in- just in-person. So, that's what I learned."

What I learned: gardening's not for me!
"I started gardening a lot more. I don't know that it's exactly a skill. Um, certainly a hobby. Not a whole lot of wisdom other than gardening's not for me."

Don't take life for granted, but do take walks.
"I think it's so wonderful to walk. That was a big thing that I gained during, um, quarantine. And then also, just, you know, as everyone - don't take anything for granted, ever. You know, all we can do is be in the moment and do the best we can, and that's- that's really it at the end of the day. And I think that's true, quarantine or not."

Awesome! I learned how to make soap!
""What skills or hobbies or wisdom did you pick up during quarantine?" Oh, this is easy, although, I picked up quite a few things. I learned how to make soap and a variety of natural products. So I saved some money, learned a new skill, and it was awesome."

Actually, sewing is really fun.
"The skill that I picked up during quarantine is sewing. I had bought a sewing machine and I actually made a blanket. It was really fun."

Skateboarding's harder than it looks, but still fun.
"Honestly, over quarantine I, for the majority of the time, did absolutely nothing, but one hobby I did pick up was skateboarding. I just started watching YouTube videos of people skating, and they were doing really cool, complex tricks, and I thought, "I can do that." So I built my own skateboard, started learning - I realized I was not that good and it was actually way harder, but it was still a fun hobby to pick up."

I absolutely fell in love with horseback riding
"One skill or hobby that I learned during quarantine was horseback riding. I went on a few trips into the mountains because that's somewhere that you were allowed to go, and horseback riding was still going on. So, I went a few times and just absolutely fell in love with it."

I reconnected with my inner child, and door stoppers.
"I think being home during quarantine really helped me connect with the side of my childhood that I, you know, I haven't connected with in a very, very long time. And for- for starters, I think one skill that I really picked up with was- was connecting with this little thing right here. Little door stopper. Yeah, that became a skill at transforming that into a musical instrument. You can play a- play a concerto with that after- after several months of me, my room and just that dang little thing to keep me company."

My quarantine hobby was centering and trusting myself.
"During quarantine I followed my instincts more, meaning that, for me, it was time to trust myself, trust in what I believe in so that I could shut down the chaos that was going all around us around that time, and especially during quarantine, I did not stop working. Um, I still went to work. I still drove to work. Um, therefore, it was easier for me to center myself, to meditate more, and to really shut down what was going on around so I could keep my sanity really. So, I don't know if it's a skill. It's not a hobby. Perhaps a wisdom. So, definitely, follow my instincts, meditate more, trust myself and really gain confidence in myself. "

I'm feeling the breeze while electric skateboarding.
"One hobby I started during quarantine was starting electric skateboarding. I don't need to drive everywhere. So, if I can have some fun, feel the breeze and, you know, save some gas on the way, that's good for me."
Alan W
I like food
New random hobbies: golf and healthy cooking.
"Picked up a lot of hobbies during quarantine, so I guess pretty grateful. Um, one was golf, which is- has been a frustrating but fun ride so far. Actually, going golfing tomorrow. Another was cooking, or more like healthy cooking, so learning how to count calories and stuff. But yeah, it's - I learned a lot of different random things, but those two were my favorite."

Learning how to keep plants alive was a skill.
"The skills I picked up during quarantine would definitely be, um, like, handling plants. Before quarantine, I would just kind of leave them alone and they would die. But since I have a lot of time on my hands, I was able to do research and take care of them, and now they're flourishing."
Sonya
Sales Rep
Picked up on TikTok and the algorithms.
"You know, I wish I had a better answer for this. I think I was just too stunned during quarantine to know what to do, um, but I would have to say TikTok. I'm not great at it, but I - that's when I started posting more and just learning how social media algorithms work."
