QOTD #00098: “Does your pet think you're a big dumb cat or dog, or does it think that it is a human? ”
We may never truly know what our pets think of us, or how smart they really are. We've heard mixed things - do our cats bring us mice to teach us how to hunt? Do our dogs think we're big, hairless dogs? What do you think your pet thinks?

What's cool about me!
I do think my dog thinks that they are a person.
"Um, I don't know if my dog thinks I am a dog or not. They try to treat me as I am one, or they do their own thing. But I do think that my dog thinks that they are a person and that they can just go anywhere and do anything, but they cannot. So..."

My dog definitely thinks everybody's a dog.
"My dog definitely thinks everybody's a dog. So we have a turtle, we have lizards, we have birds, we have a cat, and the dogs - or, the dog treats every animal like another dog. The dog is convinced that the cat is a dog. I don't know how, I don't know why, but it is! Um, so I would say, dog thinks everybody's a dog, because even when I had a little tiny bird that I found fledging, the dog even thought the bird was a dog. So, unfortunately, dogs are not the brightest. They think everything else is a dog."

My dog is a person, or at least it tries to be
"I believe that my dog thinks that it's a person because a lot of the times, it would act way too smart for just being a dog, so... And when I do things, it would try to copy me and mimic what I do, so at times I feel like it thinks of itself as a person instead of a dog."

I don't have fur and I don't sniff my food.
"I definitely -- That's a great question. I think my dog knows that I'm a person because I don't have any fur. Also, because I don't sniff my food - obviously - and also I don't eat what he eats. I eat all the good stuff. I guess, my dog thinks so. And then also, I don't bark. So I think he knows that I'm a person because I don't have fur and I don't bark, so he knows."

Not that I'm a cat, but my cat thinks I'm her mom.
"I don't think my cat thinks that I'm a cat, but she thinks that I'm her mom. And she knows that she's a cat, but I don't think that she's put it together that, like, I am also a cat. She knows we're different 'cuz she knows I - Well, okay, I don't know what she knows. I'm assuming that she doesn't think I'm just like a giant dumb cat, because I think she super respects me as the weird non-cat giant animal caretaker that I am to her."

Just a man
My dog was a dog before I adopted him, so he knows.
""Do you think your dog thinks you're a dog, or does it think it's a person?" You know, I don't think my dog thinks either. I have a pretty smart dog, I'd say, and I think he definitely understands that there's differences between us, just like he understands that a squirrel is different from him, and he understands that a deer is different from him and a bird is different from him, and I'm different from him. I think that that's pretty understandable. I think my dog understands it. But, you know, if I had to take one stand, I think that my dog probably thinks he was a dog because he was a dog before he was adopted by a human. So he probably thinks that I'm a dog - if anything - 'cuz dogs are what he first knew. It's like the story of "what came first, the chicken or the egg?" To him, he's a dog. "What came first, the dog or the human?" The dog came first. So I'm pretty sure that my dog thinks that I'm a person but understands -- but I would say that if he really didn't understand, then maybe I'm a dog in his eyes."

I think dogs can tell we're human
"Okay, so I don't have a dog or a cat currently, but when I did have a dog, honestly, I don't think she thought that I was a dog. I think pets are usually pretty smart, and they kinda know that you're just, um, a human. I've also heard that there is the thing with elephants - I think it's elephants - that they know humans are humans, and they actually react to them as we would react to a dog. Like, they think we're super cute. I feel like dogs think that humans are cute too because they just freak out over humans."

I AM just a big dumb cat.
"Now, my cat probably does think that I'm a big, dumb cat. She's always trying to trick me, fool me, and get ahead of me. She will follow me around, you know, ask for attention and playtime and let me pet her. And then right after that, she'll go right to her food spot - where her cat food is - ignore that and sit there and stare at me because she wants her tuna. She will sit there for 30 minutes to an hour and just wait. And on top of that, at nighttime she will go out, and sometimes she'll kill a mouse, and she'll bring it in and she'll put it on me. It's like a present or a way of showing off, I guess."

They're not thinking as much as you think they think.
"I'm probably wrong, and I really hope science can prove it one day, but it really seems to me like indoor pets, they're -- it's just a hum in their brain - "hmmmmmmm" - all day long. And then there's like a spark that fires once they smell food or they have to use the bathroom. That's it."

Really, we're all just big dumb animals.
""Does your cat think you're just a big, dumb animal?" Well, I don't think that at all because, you know, technically, we're all really just, you know, big dumb animals in a sort of sense, if you think about it. But does my cat think that? Or rather, cats? Um, no, because I think they're at least smart enough to understand that, you know, we're a different species than them. And, you know, just like we treat them, they'll treat us in the same respect."

They definitely know we're something different.
"Does my dog think it's - think I'm a dog? My dog doesn't -- I think dogs are smart. They definitely know we're something different. But my dog does think it's a human. It'll, like, prop itself up against the chair and sit like that, with the hands up like this. It's a good time. It seems like she's always trying to copy us or, like when we're watching a movie she'll sit up and watch the movie with us. But, nah, I'm definitely - I'm definitely a human to that dog."

They see us as their owners.
"Okay, I think pets think of us as their owners. So like, I really think that they think of us as their owners - the people who feed them. For real."
